Here at Atlas Studio, we strive to bring awareness to some of the amazing organizations making a difference in the world. In a time with so much turmoil, it's important to remember the good that still exists.

That's why today, we're spotlighting Adaptive Climbing Group – an organization that creates accessible, affordable, and transformational climbing opportunities for people with disabilities. Read on to learn a bit more about their story and how they're making a difference.

When you think of rock climbing, who do you picture on the cliff?

If you're like most people, you probably envision somebody with two able-bodied limbs scaling a sheer cliff face.

But what if we told you that there's a group of people who are shattering that stereotype?

Adaptive Climbing Group (ACG) is an organization that creates accessible, affordable, and transformational climbing opportunities for people with disabilities.

ACG was inspired by the life and accomplishments of Kareemah Batts, whose United States climbing experience post-amputation led to the first "NYC Adaptive Climbing Clinic" held on March 15, 2012, at Brooklyn Boulders gym.

Since its founding, ACG has helped countless people with disabilities grow in confidence, community, and physical rehabilitation through the power of rock climbing.

Climbing can be an incredibly empowering experience for anyone, but it's especially transformative for those who have disabilities.

In a world that so often tells them what they can't do, Adaptive Climbing Group shows them what's possible.

Building Community and Confidence Through Climbing

ACG's programs are designed to give people with disabilities the chance to experience the joy and challenge of rock climbing in a safe and supportive environment.

Whether it's their first time on a wall or they're working towards conquering a 5.12 route, everyone is welcome at ACG.

Climbing not only helps people with disabilities build strength and improve coordination, but it also boosts confidence and self-esteem.

In fact, many participants report feeling a sense of belonging and community for the first time in their lives.

For individuals who feel that they exist between the world of "able-bodied" and "disabled," Adaptive Climbing Group provides a space where they can feel like they truly belong.

This offers a much-needed sense of community for people who often feel isolated and alone.

A Physical and Mental Workout for All

In addition to the mental benefits of rock climbing, there are also plenty of physical ones. Because climbing uses nearly every muscle in the body, it's an excellent workout for people of all fitness levels.

For people with disabilities, climbing can help with everything from range of motion to balance and coordination. It's also a low-impact activity that is easy on the joints. In fact, many participants report reduced pain and improved mobility after beginning a regular climbing practice.

ACG offers four main types of experiences that help people with disabilities grow in confidence, community, and physical rehabilitation:

1. Indoor Climbing

At their Chicago, Massachusetts, and New York City locations, ACG offer inclusive and adaptive climbing clinics that are open to people of all ages and abilities. These clinics provide a safe and supportive environment for participants to learn the basics of indoor rock climbing.

2. Outdoor Climbing

ACG also offers outdoor climbing experiences for those who want to take their practice to the next level.

They partner with local guiding services to offer customized outings that are designed for each individual's needs and goals. These outdoor experiences not only provide a physical challenge but also help participants develop a deeper connection to nature.

3. AGC Kids

Children with disabilities often face unique challenges, both in and out of the classroom. That's why ACG offers AGC Kids, a program that provides inclusive climbing experiences for kids of all abilities.

Through AGC Kids, children have the opportunity to socialize with their peers, build confidence, and have fun while also getting a great workout.

As they discover their true potential, they learn to view themselves in a whole new light. This can bring about lasting changes in their attitudes, behavior, and outlook on life.

4. Paraclimbing Sponsorships

AGC offers paraclimbing sponsorships for competitive adaptive climbers.

These three tiers of sponsorship ensure that paraclimbers can engage in the adaptive climbing community at any level, from local to international competitions. This assistance can range from equipment to training and travel expenses.

Participants in ACG's programs come from all walks of life, but they all share one thing in common: a love for rock climbing. Whether it's their first time on a wall or they're working towards conquering a 5.12 route, everyone is welcome at ACG.

Breaking Down Barriers: Together.

Beneath the climbing experiences rests AGC's true mission: to break down the barriers that people with disabilities face, both in and out of the climbing world.

AGC does this by providing access to climbing experiences that are typically unavailable or unaffordable for people with disabilities. They also work to change the perception of what is possible for people with disabilities, both within the climbing community and beyond.

By connecting with community partners and collaborating with like-minded organizations, ACG is slowly but surely breaking down the barriers that stand in the way of people with disabilities living full and active lives. When we come together and see what's possible, there's no limit to what we can achieve.

Join AGC to Bring Hope

The inspiring thing about AGC is that anyone can be a part of its mission. You don't have to have a disability to join in on the fun.

There are plenty of ways to get involved, from volunteering at one of their events to donating money or equipment. You can even become a sponsor and help cover the cost of paraclimbing competitions.

No matter how you choose to get involved, know that you're making a difference in the lives of people with disabilities. When we all work together, we can help AGC achieve its goals and bring hope to those who need it most.

At Atlas Studio, we’re proud to promote the work of Adaptive Climbing Group. Learn more about how you can get involved with ACG by visiting them online, and discover how you can take part in their mission to break down barriers and bring hope to those with disabilities.
